What is a Manuscript?

Kipling manuscript

A manuscript is traditionally a document that is written by hand. Examples of antique manuscripts include ancient and medieval books written on papyrus, parchment, or vellum. Literary manuscripts can be written by hand or typed or printed from a computer; this manuscript is a text of a work that is either unpublished or in its pre-published form. Manuscripts can also include diaries, letters, and other personal writing. Cushing Library has multiple manuscript collections in the Literature and Science Fiction collections, including material from the Rudyard Kipling Collection and the George R. R. Martin Collection.

Items from these collections can be viewed in the Kelsey Reading Room. Please note that some material by living authors may be restricted.
