The Fruits of a Gentle Madness exhibit and the catalogue produced to accompany it featured highlights from the Al Lowman Printing Arts Library and Research Archive, which documents fine printing, book design, bibliography, and the history of books and printing. It also contains the largest collection of material relating to Carl Herzog ever formed by a private individual and perhaps second only to the great collection at the University of Texas, El Paso (where Hertzog founded and ran the university press for many years). Al Lowman persistently sought, over decades, every book, pamphlet, program, brochure, letterhead, menu, invitation, note card, and practically every other scrap of paper or printed matter to pass through the hands of Carl Hertzog. As a friend of the printer, he was able to acquire many things directly from the source, and is perhaps best viewed not just as a collector but as Herzog’s Boswell.
