Why is Cushing Memorial Library a Closed Stacks Library? Why can’t I browse for what I’m looking for in the stacks myself?

Due to the fragile nature of many materials in Cushing, our storage areas are temperature-controlled, humidity-controlled, and pressure-controlled to protect items. Each time someone enters these rooms, the atmosphere inside fluctuates slightly. Therefore, we limit access to Cushing Staff only to preserve materials.

Reading Room Policies

You will need a photo ID to view material in the Kelsey Reading Room. We also require that you refrain from bringing food or drink into the building. For more on our Reading Room Policies, please see our Reading Room Policies page.

Can copies be made of material in Cushing Memorial Library?

Requests will be assessed on an individual basis. Because of the unique nature of the material in our collections, Cushing Library reserves the right to refuse duplication requests that would potentially damage old and fragile material. In addition, due to copyright issues, the complete contents of books or journals cannot be reproduced. Reproductions may be provided from select pages of books, manuscripts and original photographs. Photocopy and scan requests require a minimum 24 hour turnaround. Video orders may take one to two weeks. Information about associated fees can be found on our Duplication Services page.
